Ages 12 – 18 Years Old

Adolescent Program

At Northside Montessori School, we understand that adolescence is a transformative period of life. From the ages of twelve to eighteen, young people become humanistic explorers – driven to understand themselves, their values, and their place in the world. They are curious, creative, and increasingly practical, seeking meaningful, hands-on experiences. This is a time of identity formation, social discovery, and a growing desire for independence and purpose.

Our Adolescent Program is intentionally designed to meet the unique developmental needs of this stage of life. Deeply based in Montessori principles, the program nurtures the adolescent’s quest for identity and belonging, offering an environment that supports intellectual growth, emotional development, valorisation and active contribution to society.

We offer a carefully prepared environment that encourages integrated, interdisciplinary learning and authentic engagement with the world. Students participate in Socratic Seminars (student led discussions), real-world experiences, and purposeful work that capitalises on their strengths and interests. Weekly student-led class councils foster responsibility and voice, while regular off-campus excursions – to libraries, local businesses, museums, galleries, and community organisations -connect students to the broader world and deepen their learning.

Creative expression, community engagement, and meaningful dialogue are woven into the fabric of our program. Adolescents engage in service learning, restorative justice practices, artistic and performance-based projects, independent research, and interdisciplinary explorations known as Plans of Study and Work. These experiences empower students to explore world issues, take ownership of their learning, collaborate, question, and create – developing the confidence and skills to become thoughtful and proactive members of society.

A Rigorously Academic and Relevant Curriculum

The Northside Montessori Adolescent Program is fully compliant with the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) and is designed to ensure both academic rigour and developmental appropriateness. Our integrated curriculum delivers all mandated outcomes while aligning with Montessori’s vision of holistic education.

Students in Years 7 to 10 work toward the NSW Record of School Achievement (RoSA), with all coursework meeting NESA requirements. For Years 11 and 12, Northside Montessori School is NESA registered and is an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School offering the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. IB World Schools are a global community committed to high quality, challenging, and internationally minded education. The International Baccalaureate philosophy aligns closely with Montessori principles, placing the student at the centre of learning and valuing interrelated inquiry, independence, and global awareness. More than just academic excellence, both Montessori schools and the IB offers a holistic education that nurtures critical thinking, personal growth, and a deep sense of responsibility to self and others.

At Northside Montessori School, we believe this approach empowers students to become compassionate, capable and engaged citizens of the world.
