Week 2

“The child has been the constructor of every one of us. Before we became an important adult, a respected person, a person who takes their part in society, we have been another personality, a personality very mysterious, not considered in this world, not respected, a person that has no importance, no choice. Yet they is capable of something we cannot do – they are capable of constructing an immense world in a way we cannot even imagine of doing.”
(Maria Montessori, Citizen of the World)

Northside’s Reconciliation Action Plan

Northside Montessori is currently working towards developing our Reconciliation Action Plan. The research began over a year ago and the working group was established in July 2023. We are working through the Narragunnawali Platform to develop our Reconciliation Action Plan.

A Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) is a formal commitment to reconciliation. It will document how our school will strengthen relationships, respect and opportunities in the classroom, around the school and with the community.

The Narragunnawali RAP framework outlines a sustainable, holistic approach to driving reconciliation in education by building relationships, respect and opportunities:

• in the classroom (in teaching, learning and curricula)

• around the school (in the ethos and activities within the wider school or service environment)

• with the community (in the partnerships that extend beyond the school or service gates).  (Narragunnawali)

We have spent several months writing our Vision for reconciliation and would like to share it with our community.

Janene Johnson
Deputy Principal

Northside Montessori School’s Vision for Reconciliation
Reconciliation for Northside Montessori means more than words or an apology.
Reconciliation is a commitment to action so we can respectfully walk together as a nation.

Our action will be to recognise that we are working and educating on Cammeragal Land of the Darramuragal Nation and that this land was never relinquished.

We will be forever grateful to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples for protecting and caring for country, waters and culture and for their continuing connection to the land.

With a sense of unity, we will learn about and pass on an honest history that respects Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
We will build relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and pass on what we are fortunate enough to learn from them.

Northside Montessori is committed to providing an inclusive and safe place of education that embeds Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander traditions, cultures, languages, generational impact and perspectives.

The traditional custodians of this country have knowledge to share and we are listening.

Every day we will strive to include First Nations’ perspectives, a story telling culture passed on since the Dreaming, for our future of togetherness and unity in the hands and hearts of generations to follow.

Reconciliation is our responsibility and only with heartfelt action and collaboration can come genuine change.
