Newsletter Thursday 28 March, Week 8 Term 1, 2024
“The children of today will make all the discoveries of tomorrow. All the discoveries of mankind will be known to them and they will improve what has been done and make fresh discoveries. They must make all the improvements in houses, cities, communication, methods of production, etc. that are to be made. The future generation must not only know how to do what we can teach them, they must be able to go a step further.”
(Maria Montessori, The 1946 London Lectures)
Good to Be Back
It is great to be back this week and although a shorter week for everyone, it has been a very busy week in the life of the school. Our 6-9 classes have been the the Walkabout wildlife Park, or Adolescent program have been to the Opera House and our 9-12 have been to Tree Tops Adventure Park, Cockatoo Island and had a sleep over at the school, then also today our Year 7& 8 Adolescent Program students have been to Warragamba Dam. This combined with an information night for parents on Tuesday has meant a very busy week at Northside.
While it is challenging to be away for an extended period during term time, the opportunity to attend the Montessori Conference in the US as well as visit schools was excellent. Finishing off the trip via South Korea to attend the Global International Baccalaureate Conference in Daegu, was a good chance to get more insight into the structure and nature of the global network of schools who deliver this program worldwide.
During my attendance at this conference I was able to meet up with staff from Sydney based schools who are part of the NSW IB Schools network, connect with some staff from Melbourne Montessori School who deliver the IB for their Year 11 & 12 students, and also make connections with IB staff who are involved in our process for Authorization and ultimately acceptance as an IB World School.
I was also able to attend a number of workshops which provided some practical advice about our IB journey, as well as information to prepare us for what is to come. There is still a lot of preparation, training and work to be done throughout this process, but are confident that we have commenced this work early enough to not make this a pressured process for our school.
While I have been away, Margaret Kroeger who will be our IB Coordinator has completed another part of the IB training, and we are also planning for other staff in our Adolescent Program to undertake the specific trainings required for subjects that we will be offering. We have an excellent staff in our Adolescent Program and are so fortunate to be building a wonderful program for our adolescent students.
Please be reminded that tomorrow is a Public Holiday, as too is Monday 1 April. Week 9 will commence on Tuesday April.
Thank you
