Sport

Whilst not strictly a co-curricular activity, our Sport program includes both the mandatory curriculum as well as Sport opportunities within our normal school day.

The School employs a physical education teacher to deliver the NSW BOSTES sports curriculum to children from 3 to 12 years of age in keeping with Montessori principles. Children are encouraged to do their best and develop overall skills and to foster a love of sport and physical fitness. Elements of the Physical Development, Health & Physical Education syllabus are also delivered by the trained physical education teacher for children of school age (Extended Day to Level 6).

With our preschool children the emphasis is on development of gross motor skills. For lower primary children, the emphasis is on refining their gross motor skills. For the upper primary children, the understanding of conventional rules is also developed. Features of our sporting program are that it:

  • Is non-competitive
  • Emphasizes teamwork
  • Develops and refines gross motor skills in children
  • Develops game skills and an understanding of rules that apply to games and to sport
  • Is inclusive of all children who are encouraged to participate within their capacity

Each year we also offer a series of sporting clinics which have included clinics by Cricket Australia, the National Rugby League, the Sydney Kings basketball club and the AFL. Swimming is also a feature in our program, and this is taught by fully qualified Austswim instructors. We also raise awareness for the Heart Foundation by participating in Jump Rope for Heart from time to time.

Our sporting program is offered at the School for pre-primary classes and also at Bannockburn Oval (which is within walking distance of the Northside Campus) for primary children.
